Steelers Ink Receiver Wes Lyons, Finally Give Roethlisberger His Red Zone Target

This past Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to a two year contract with former West Virginia Mountaineers wide receiver, Wes Lyons.

Lyons started for the Mountaineers for three seasons, catching 42 passes for 517 yards.

Lyons, who stands 6’8 and tips the scales at over 240 pounds is the red zone target that quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger has been asking for since he came to the Steelers in 2004.

With his size, Lyon’s brings a bit of versatility to his role on the team, adding 15-20 pounds would make him an ideal tight end, making Matt Spaeth’s role on the team obsolete, or potentially being an H-Back type of player.

Rumors have been flying around (well, flying around here, anyway) about the Steelers being in the hunt for Plaxico Burress, a move that Hines Ward would be very warm to. The only upside of signing Burress would be his size and red zone talent, which is negated by Lyons’ ability to catch the jump ball.

Lyon’s has the ability and skill set to block very well, and with Ward there to prod him along in that aspect of the game, he’ll get the hang out it in no time, and without a doubt will be able to plant defensive backs into the turf, opposing linebackers will be on the lookout for him as well, because he’s their size, and that’s not something that most of them are comfortable with.

The most concerning thing about Lyons is the fact that he is indeed 6’8”, started for three years, and caught ZERO touchdowns. A receiver that is that tall, should be the first option in the red zone, no questions asked.

The reason for Lyons’ lack of production is apparently his lack of focus, according to himself and former college coach, Rich Rodriguez, he would come out dragging some days, because he had no games to look forward to. If there’s a team that can motivate someone to play hard on every snap, you’d better believe that it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Lyons’ is used in the offensive scheme, and whether or not his potential will pan out into production for this squad that’s packed with receiving talent.
